Game 4 recap: Hornets 97, Mavericks 84

Prior to Sunday, the Hornets hadn’t won a game in Dallas since 1998. So if you’re going to end a decade-long streak like that, why not do it by holding the high-powered Mavericks to a meager 84 points, their second-worst offensive game since they acquired Jason Kidd in February? Why not do it by dominating the second half, sending Mavericks fans to the exits in droves midway through the fourth quarter?
This one was especially sweet for the Hornets, who went up 92-73 with 3:38 remaining. At that moment you heard something you never thought would happen in the American Airlines Center: visiting Hornets fans loudly doing the “MVP" chant for Chris Paul, as the All-Star point guard stood at the foul line. The Mavericks’ fans who opted not to leave early were left with the task of trying to drown out that chant by booing.
A quality road team all season, New Orleans shook off an ominous start Sunday – down 30-23 after a quarter – to pull into a 48-44 halftime lead. The Hornets gradually took control of the scoreboard in the second half, led by big third quarters from David West (10 of his game-best 24 points) and Peja Stojakovic (8 of his 19 points). New Orleans went up 10 through three quarters; Dallas never got within single digits in the final stanza.
With the game slipping away at 7:16 of the fourth quarter, Dallas point guard Jason Kidd was ejected after committing a flagrant foul (type 2) on Jannero Pargo. As Pargo drove to the basket for a fast-break layup attempt, Kidd yanked Pargo to the floor by the side of Pargo’s head, causing the 6-foot-1 Hornet to fall hard. Pargo braced his fall with his hands, then walked away from a potential confrontation.
Game 5 is Tuesday at the New Orleans Arena, with tip-off at 6 p.m. The Hornets will be attempting to win their first playoff series since 2002.
"We have to have the same approach and focus," said West, who uses boxing as part of his offseason training. "We have to go in with the attitude that we have to be the aggressor. We have to be the one who throws the first punch."

Hornets Update
STARTERS
Chris Paul
: Kudos to the New Orleans fans who coordinated the aforementioned MVP chant for CP in enemy territory. I’m not sure if Paul heard the cheer, but it’s possible it was in the back of his mind when he said on TNT’s postgame show that “it’s a great feeling to go up 3-1, knowing we’re going back to New Orleans, where I feel like we have some of the best fans in the league.” By Paul’s lofty, MVP-caliber standards, Game 4 was an average outing, with him scoring 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting. But he also had eight assists and seven rebounds.
Morris Peterson: My vote for unsung hero of the game. He was big in the Hornets’ weathering an early push by the Mavericks, by scoring eight first-quarter points, including three jump shots and a fast-break layup. He finished with 10 points and two blocked shots in 27 minutes.
Tyson Chandler: A second straight extremely quiet game for the center, who had just two points and five rebounds. Here’s one stat that looks pretty good though: the Hornets were plus-22 with him on the floor, the best plus-minus of anyone.
Peja Stojakovic: He was vintage Peja, drilling several timely perimeter bombs, including a pair of treys in the third quarter. During the middle quarters, which the Hornets dominated by a 53-36 margin, he piled up 14 of his 19 points.
David West: The Mavericks made him work for just about everything he got, but at times he carried the Hornets’ offense on his back. He scored 22 points through three quarters, mixing in his repertoire of post-up moves and face-up jumpers from 15 to 19 feet. Another big moment for a guy who is an All-Star now but still not that recognizable yet to casual fans.

RESERVES
Julian Wright:
A spectacular breakout performance by the talented rookie, who finished with 11 points and two steals. In the first half, he made two athletic finishes for baskets on fast breaks. Then in the second half, he had an outstanding sequence in which he hit a corner jumper; stole the ball at the other end from behind against Jason Kidd; and dribbled the ball all the way to the other end and was fouled. “He had some big steals and made some big shots,” CP said of Wright. More praise, from TNT analyst Doug Collins on Wright: “Great minutes tonight.”
Jannero Pargo: Drilled three perimeter shots for seven quick points during New Orleans’ 25-14 second quarter. He finished with 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting. The 6-foot-1 guard also pulled down some tough defensive rebounds in the paint, totaling six caroms. You have to love what this guy did in the two games in Dallas this weekend.
Hilton Armstrong: Two points, four fouls and a rebound in 13 minutes. He did have one nice highlight, grabbing an offensive board over a Dallas defender and laying it back in for two points.
Bonzi Wells: He went 1-for-4 for two points, scoring on a nifty reverse layup off a feed from CP. Otherwise, he made a few mistakes with the ball, throwing a long pass too far for Chandler to reach it on a break, then missing a contested dunk that led to a Dallas dunk at the other end.
Ryan Bowen: Subbed in with 3:38 left and the Hornets leading by 19. Two rebounds.

I don't wanna be cocky or brag or anything but I think I bring good luck to the team. Ha ha. I'm 'kidding'. And as far as I can see, I'm the only one doing that =) Got it?

Nobody 'kidds' with the Hornets.

Special win. Talking seriously now, I really hope that this game shows to everyone that now, especially in the playoffs, games will be won with defense. It's not like every home game we're gonna score 110+ points, so one more step to learn and one more accomplishment done fellas.

Really happy right now. Where's Mark Cuban to post here tonight? Huh?

What a great bounce back win for the Hornets. They showed a ton of mental toughness, especially after another tough 1st quarter. I thought the bench provided a huge lift in the first part of the 2nd quarter with CP3 on the bench. I thought Julian Wright was great, especially with his energy. He gave the team a big spark when we were losing.

Another positive aspect of the game was the Hornets poise and composure. When J-Kidd gave Pargo a flagrant foul midway through the 4th, the Hornets kept their cool. They were about to go 3-1 and they did not need anyone to get into trouble in that situation. Good job there.

Finally, the defence for the Hornets after the 1st quarter was outstanding. Plus, we kept the Mavs off the free throw line for the most part. Only 16 attempts for the Mavs (they average over 30). The only neagtive was letting Jason Terry go off in the first three quarters. But the good thing is that he was a non factor in the 4th.

Now the Hornets must close out this series on Tuesday. They must show the killer instinct and not give the Mavs any hope of coming back in this series.

I'm glad Pargo didn't retaliate against Kidd's cheap foul. I'd much rather he take it out on Kidd on Tuesday by lighting him up.

Let's finish this thing Tuesday bees!!!

As i've said other times, if we would play like the hornets, yeah, mavs would have no hope to beat us. The big problem is we rarely start the first quarter as we do with the others, but we can fix that...now at the hive, let's beat this losers and go to the second round! Geaux Hornets!

Bloggers,

The sting of game 3 loss is GONE. Take that foolish anonymous Mavs fan from the pregame blog. What a great win tonight. Great team win. We could not shoot as poorly as we did in game 3. Julian was great tonight. Poised for game 5. DWest 3rd quarter explosion was just nasty. Dampier you were helpless...

Jkidd should just retire and join UFC. What a punk. He is getting what he deserves for demanding trades, undermining coaches and blaming others. The basketball God's are giving him a payback beatdown that will stain his career forever. Ready to Fan Up at the Hive. Hornet fever makes it difficult to sleep.

Great win on the road, how sweet it was to watch Mavs fans leaving early : )

Now it's time to finish the job, which will be easy I think with the help of our crowd.

Is Kidd gonna be supended for this game ?? I don't know why he did that, I mean Pargo doesn't look like Kidd's wife at all =)

If Kidd isn't suspended, he will be booed so loudly he'll wish he was.

Wow people. It appears as though the Mavs have gotten under everyone's skin. There is an impressive amount of venom coming from you guys today. Let's try to keep it classy though if you don't mind? The players/coaches have done a great job of ignoring some of the nonsense that has been going on off the court over the past week. I think it's best if we do the same.

Also, this series is not over, as much as it appears to be.

After everything that has happened in the series and with the Hornets now up 3-1, I can't even imagine what it's going to be like in the Arena tomorrow night.

Vilmar, the Hornets' defense has been one of the most overlooked aspects of their success. The D has truly been outstanding. Some of the guys who are known for their offense, such as Pargo, probably need to start getting more credit for the other end of the floor.

I agree with several of you who complimented Pargo on his reaction to the hard foul from Kidd. I'm going to ask Pargo about it today in practice and see what he thought. I think it was a clear no-win situation to escalate the situation. By then, the Hornets were well on their way to a huge road win and 3-1 series edge.

Jim, totally agree with your point about keeping our cool. The Mavs are getting very testy about being down 3-1, especially with Mark Cuban at the helm, and they will come out strong in game 5. The best thing for us is to remain calm and composed and come out with a strong start. No need to retaliate back. Plus, there is enough nonsense already in the NBA playoffs in the Cavs-Wizards series (LeBron James vs. DeShawn Stevenson). The NBA doesn't need another sideshow.

Just read a report on si.com that Kidd will not be suspended for game 5. With that in mind, it should be a fun atmosphere at the New Orleans Arena tomorrow. I will be watching closely here in Canada.

Hornets did such a great job last night! Kudos to Pargo and the team as a whole for not retaliating. All you hear is that New Orleans is such a young team, and I think they have shown a lot of maturity throughout the series. There have been a lot of bad and ignored calls while in Dallas, I'm sure they will be glad to be home with the fans support! Kidd can talk all he wants you watch the replay and his act was intentional. I wonder how much Mark Cuban will pay him for that one?!!

If you can't win by being the best team, then, try to hurt the other players. Is this the Mav's slogan?
The push on CP3 was bad enough, but, the Kidd take-down of Pargo was indefensible. At least the Refs kicked him out, more than they did with Dampier. A fine would be a good idea for both of them. Hornets kept their cool- the only way to go- and didn't get rattled this game. Great win. GO HORNETS! Loyal Fan

Hornets Fans,

I cannot wait for the game tomorrow. Jason Kidd DESERVES to be booed by Hornets fans for that flagrant foul on our sparkplug Pargo. I am hoping for the poetic justice of a massive boo-fest, a Mavs series clinching loss,Byron's coaching reputation restored and the entire NBA focusing on Kidd's failures. I absolutely DO NOT want him suspended. Winning in 5 in our house would be the best revenge for all Hornets Fans. Get2theHive

I don't mind at all and I'm sorry for that, it's just that by the end of the game, sometimes, you're too excited and when I can I usually post here right after the game. Also, Jim I'm sorry for saying somethings which might be wrong about the team, as you know I don't get to see the games so I kinda build opinions based on your comments, blogs, nba.com, espn.

Now, keeping my composure, I completely agree this series is not over. Dallas' a great team and a home defeat could be deadly. I get that 'offensive and demerit' sort of comments about an opponent just fuel them, so it's just right we fans respect Dallas as the team's done so far.
